How to take better photos to sell a motorcycle online

The importance of visual presentation

When potential buyers scroll through dozens of listings, it is the main image that convinces them to click. Before worrying about writing the text, you must ensure your visual presentation is flawless. Taking the right motorcycle listing photos is the single most effective way to stand out, inspire trust, and successfully sell a used motorcycle without wasting weeks answering skeptical questions.

Preparation: meticulous cleaning

You cannot take good photos of a dirty motorcycle. Before pulling out your camera or smartphone, the vehicle must be washed thoroughly. Remove grease from the rear wheel, shine the exhaust pipes, clean the dashboard screen, and polish the fairings. While a clean and well-presented vehicle improves initial visual appeal and builds buyer trust, it is important to remember that presentation alone does not replace or demonstrate mechanical maintenance; clear documentation of service history is still essential.

Lighting and background

The environment dictates the quality of your shots. Never shoot a motorcycle inside a dark, cluttered garage or a cramped driveway with laundry hanging in the background. Move the bike to an open, neutral location, like an empty parking lot or a quiet street with a simple wall behind it. For lighting, avoid the harsh midday sun, which creates deep, unattractive shadows. The best time to shoot is during the "golden hour" (shortly after sunrise or before sunset) or on a bright but overcast day, which provides soft, even lighting across the entire vehicle.

The mandatory angles

To give the buyer a complete understanding of the vehicle's proportions, you must provide a 360-degree virtual tour. Start with the classic profile shots: one full left side and one full right side, taken by crouching down so the camera is level with the fuel tank. Then, capture the three-quarter angles (front-left, front-right, rear-left, rear-right). These angles make the motorcycle look dynamic and show the depth of the bodywork.

Focusing on details and the dashboard

Once the wide shots are done, move in closer. Buyers want to see the condition of the specific components. Take a clear, sharply focused photo of the dashboard with the ignition turned on, ensuring the exact odometer reading is fully visible and readable. Photograph the engine casings, the exhaust, and the seat to prove there are no tears or excessive wear marks.

Tires and mechanics

Consumables are a major concern for buyers. Take close-up photos of both the front and rear tires, explicitly showing the depth of the tread and capturing the full tire identification code on the sidewall, which includes the DOT marking indicating the week and year of manufacture. Do the same for the chain and sprocket, and capture the front brake discs to show they are not heavily scored.

Photographing flaws honestly

It might seem counterproductive, but highlighting the defects of your motorcycle actually accelerates the sale. If there is a scratch on the fairing, a small dent in the tank, or oxidation on the mirrors, take a dedicated, clear photo of it. Complete transparency prevents the buyer from feeling deceived during the physical viewing, which is crucial for maintaining trust and closing the deal.

How many photos should you include?

A listing with only three photos looks suspicious and incomplete, while one with forty photos can become repetitive. The goal is to provide a complete, high-quality set of photos covering all relevant sides and details so the buyer has a comprehensive view of the vehicle. Once your photo gallery is thorough and polished, you will be fully prepared to create a used motorcycle ad with a compelling description to match your stunning visuals.
