A2 Licence: What motorcycles can you ride?

Understanding the A2 licence

The A2 motorcycle licence is a major milestone for young riders. Available from age 19 in the UK (and 18 in Italy), it allows you to step up to medium-capacity motorcycles. It offers the perfect stepping stone, combining thrilling performance with manageable power. To get your A2 licence, you must pass a motorcycle theory test, a hazard perception test, and a comprehensive two-part practical exam.

Power limits: What can you legally ride?

The regulations are strict and crucial to follow. With an A2 licence, you are legally permitted to ride motorcycles that meet these specific criteria:

  • Maximum power output of 35 kW (approximately 47 bhp).
  • A power-to-weight ratio not exceeding 0.2 kW/kg.
  • If the bike is restricted, the original unrestricted version must not produce more than 70 kW (roughly 94 bhp).

Always check the V5C logbook to ensure the kW rating matches these legal limits. Check our FAQ for more details on registration and legal limits.

Restricted motorcycles: Are they a good idea?

Buying a restricted motorcycle is an incredibly smart route for ambitious riders. It allows you to purchase your dream bike early, ride it legally, and get used to its handling. Once you gain enough experience and upgrade to a full Category A licence, you can simply have the mechanical or ECU restrictor removed by an authorised dealer to unleash its full potential. When you are ready to take the leap, browse our inventory to find the perfect A2-compliant bike to start your journey.
