When and how to change motorcycle tyres

Recognising dangerous tyre wear

Worn tyres severely compromise your motorcycle's grip, handling, and overall safety. It's not just about passing inspections; it's about trusting your bike in corners. Check the tread depth regularly (the minimum legal limit is 1mm, but replacing at 2mm is much safer) and always inspect the tyre's age using the DOT code on the sidewall to prevent riding on dangerously hardened rubber. A tyre might look new but handle like wet ice if it's too old.

When and how to replace them safely

Motorcycle tyres generally lose their optimal performance after 5 years, even with plenty of tread left, because the rubber compounds degrade and harden over time.

  • Check the DOT code: The last four digits show the week and year of manufacture (e.g., 2219 means the 22nd week of 2019).
  • Look for cracking: Inspect the sidewalls for dry rot or tiny cracks that indicate severe aging.

Always use a professional tyre fitter for mounting and dynamic balancing. If you are buying a second-hand machine, be sure to check our guide on what to inspect regarding tyres and consumables so you don't get stuck with an immediate replacement bill.
